Why do so many adults lack self awareness

Why didn't they learn?
Why are they incapable of self reflection?
do you need an internal monologue to self-reflect and correct behaviors?
It's both scary and depressing how many people I see that are seemingly driven entirely by impulse or instinct.
Take for example people that verbally abuse customer support workers. They will dehumanize direct all their frustration and anger at them like they are the source of the problem, but they never think to themself that this anger is misplaced and that abusing some random wagie isn't going to solve the problems any quicker.
