When the Warsaw Pact ended they paid their own debts and left their satellites to their own, who were more or less picked off by the IMF and left in a perpetual state of butthurt over Russia. There isn't a single financial metric of Russia's that underperforms the US right now, every single metric says they improved after cutting off the dead weight. They have virtually 0 external debt and all of their internal debt is in private lending. Meanwhile the US had its public debt utterly raped by Reagan trying to subsidize the entire global market.
