i have made a lot of progress but i guess i have to explain the full problem
there's this modeling tool for laser design otou wanted from one of his distant ex-coworkers, but he's being an asshat and not responding due to some incredibly petty office politics. instead, otou wants me to rebuild it and improve it, one bit at a time

the first bit is modeling the predicted laser crystal energy absorption given an absorption spectrum and a description of the pumping diodes. it's a basic application of beer's law, except it's integrated across a function of wavelength for diode power and the absorption coefficient are dependent on the wavelength. each diode's power description is some kind of normal distribution
now because that FUCKING JACKASS coworker didn't share the code, i can't see what his actual equation for modeling the diode power is. i know it's a bell curve, i don't know *which* one. gaussian comes close, but i need to be closer, so right now i have every part of this initial step done except getting this exact diode curve right so i can match his model's outputs much more closely
i tried lorentzian (totally wrong, the guy's appears as narrower tails, not fatter), i've ruled out a bunch of others, so now i'm gonna try a raised cosine distribution. but who fucking knows, and all of this would be avoided if it were not for incredibly pathetic resentments and dramas of the babies known as phd holders

yes that's what's annoying me more than the math actually, it's the horribly stupid pettiness. most of the annoying parts of this step are done now i am just swapping out the equations and fiddling with the numbers a bit until i get something that looks right. the point isn't even if it *is* right, but proving i can duplicate the existing model's output

it's even dumber if you know otou's full story behind this: back during original star wars, otou was an entry level engineer whose tiny little startup of a dozen or so engineers won a big government contract to design some designator or something. so these nobodies in hodunk midwest were now in discussions with livermore national labs on this project
they were having trouble making the design work: the standard stuff they were used to designing couldn't meet spec. otou, being entry and fresh undergrad at the time, and not usually allowed in the design discussions of these super duper phd bigwigs, would spend time trying to read up on what would work. he pulled out the big seminal text of laser engineering (every field has a seminal text that is the beginning and mostly end of everything, but it's always super dense and tedious that everyone instead reads bite-sized books that discuss parts of it) and found that the description of an unstable resonator seemed to meet exactly what they needed. he discussed that with the chief engineer, he agreed, and otou got to present it to the design meeting only to get laughed out of the room and pulled off of design work. then, months later, they come back and say "actually we need an unstable resonator"
that's been a sore spot with him his entire career, the reason why he went all the way to a phd was so he could yell back in the faces of those types, and made him very aware a lot of people in laser design are just copycatting what designs they've already seen and don't understand the actual physics behind it

in the later parts of designing that unstable resonator, their group, with all the big star wars livermore money they had, just directly contracted the guy that wrote that textbook to explain how to make it go from this theory to production. in the process of that the guy showed them that all the huge, mind-destroying differential equations in the book can, in almost all feasible cases where you'd use a laser, reduce to much simpler form. and on top of that, you can just use numerical methods to represent the solution in polynomial form, and get a curve you can actually just put into excel and make that your model. otou has carried that exact solution with him for decades
much much later in his career, with that solution curve padded with a billion other effects he's added (like measuring temperature dependencies, or statistical variances, or w/e other shit he encountered in the lab), he had to design an absurd laser with really stupid size and power constraints. it actually fell into that like 5% of stuff the guy's reduced equations wouldn't solve and he had to go back and find the exception cases, but he designed something that barely made it in spec taking advantage of some attributes of the physics of the laser - well beyond me to explain directly, but it's that for a lot of the metrics of laser performance, some of them are dependent on measurements across the whole system (like "distance travelled" even within the crystal and optics, or polarization, or how the whole thing behaves over temperature). so he made an odd design that had a couple strange constraints, like

that pissed off the other engineers to no end, because "you can't have variable designs like that." and when asked to explain, he'd pull out these formulaic reductions of the physics, which they'd then scoff at. "those aren't real solutions!"

the thing is at the end of the day his fit spec and ended up being the final design, and all theirs failed. he then moved on to other things, while those engineers remained there. the first thing they did was try to change the design, and then the laser fell under spec, which violated contract, which put them in trouble, and then they'd contract dad to go back out there and fix it, and he'd go there and just return the design back to where it was and tell them to stop being fuckwads
this has apparently pissed them off to no end because they're convinced he's "cheating" somehow, and they still keep changing the design and all sorts of other petty bullshit like stealing parts from experiments he asks them to run remotely because he's tired of flying over to just recorrect the design (so then when it fails they can say otou is a moron). and meanwhile they can't build anything else. it's apparently building a lot of resentment that even the guys that were on otou's side there in the past (like this engineer we're reverse engineering the model of) are starting to blow him off like this - probably because they feel like he's showing them up or making them feel like idiots (because they are) while his physics are "wrong" (because he's not paralyzing himself with impossible diffeqs like they think you "have to" because it's what smart people do)
so he wants this model because the idea behind it is not bad, but he thinks the guy doesn't actually understand the laser physics, he just understands the statistical modeling in theory. he wants to take that and combine it with his models so he has a more complete laser model to estimate which designs will work and why
