With work requirements? I suppose it comes down to a fundamental philosophical and moral question: should the state help support those who are a net-negative to the economic health of the nation? If someone is fine with those who can't fulfill those work requirements going without food and healthcare and ultimately suffering and dying because that's just how life is meant to be, then, well, as much as I disagree, it's a consistent stance. But with the amount of wealth which exists in the US, when there is so much abundance, why not show some generosity and lend assistance to people solely because they're human and our fellow citizens? Not to mention, as you said, you never know if someone will make an economic contribution down the line once the government assistance helps them get their affairs in order. For example, in my own life, free healthcare allowed me to get on the medication I needed to make my life livable and comfortable, and with it I can go on to engage with my pursuit of happiness. Without it, I'd be really beat down. Maybe I would've made it through anyway, maybe not.

lets say i have a few health problems but no personal wealth, a few luiquid assets, not much personal property and no personal income due to different circumstance.

lets say i have a few dead teeth that are broken and rotting and poisoning my body. it'd cost $15k to get oral surgery and implants. the idea is to just get a job with bad teeth, hoping it won't be an issue, saving up $15k or.. hopefully qualify for loans or maintain a good credit score.. while also paying various bills to have a home to live in and food to eat for myself and my family.

oh and driving one night there was an invisible pothole so now i gotta get $500 to have that repaired in order to get to and from the new job im trying to get making $18 an hour.

oh and now my wife needs a root canal too. oh and my son also needs new clothes and on and on.

life is totally different when you have less money. it forces you to find ways to do more with less. and that can be bad.. as we've seen with many other nations. standards slip and degeneracy and poor physical and societal health ensues. but as long as you have just enough, you are humbled by the few things you are able to afford. but once you can't do the most simple things.. life becomes a dread and people get desperate and anxious. meanwhile on the other end we got ultra wealthy people with far more than they need and their values inevitably get warped.

if only they were willing to help out those with less. and i dont just mean with direct donations but ways of helping other people to acquire more wealth. elevate the general standard of living for everyone without forcing it via taxation.

Well, that's a pipe-dream, hence why we have taxes. Otherwise, I sympathize with everything else you said, anon. I'm glad I live in a liberal state with robust government assistance programs. Are there negatives too, like a massive homeless problem fueled by drug addicts who are living off of those same government benefits and lax-to-no enforcement and a general tolerance by the state? Yes. But it's worth it, and even still, are those really negative when it's what comes with being humane.
