With all the talk of civil war brewing I was wondering if the British government would try backing off a bit (the way Canada's government did; of course, it's only temporary) in order to defuse tension or just stay the course, but I didn't think they would intensify.

I don't think it'll work, and if it doesn't work the consequences for them will be a lot more severe in terms of the intensity of unrest and the eventual retaliations if they're overthrown.
