This has been a well known fact since beds were invented and this "research" is nothing new. The problem is that while it's better for your back, it still takes longer to fall asleep and it's harder to stay asleep, even if you're used to it. You don't have to literally stay on the fucking ground, just get a firm spring mattress and don't fall for the memory foam meme.

I've been sleeping on a plywood bed I made out of scraps from the carpenters shop at work for about 3 years now. Honestly my shoulders have never felt better. I'll even go without a pillow most of the time, just a thick sleeping bag to lie down on.

Or, you know, you could just get a mattress that isn't memory foam. There's an in between of "sleep on that hard fucking floor" and "sleep in a mattress you've created a giant dent in over the past 5 years because some idiot thought making them follow your contours was a good idea"

Memory foam is the real problem. That's what's bad for you, not beds in general. There should be a class action lawsuit against Tempur-Pedic and their back-killing, overpriced beds.
Toppers are a meme too. All you need is enough cushion to where you don't feel the springs.

I tried it for 6 months or so. Not completely on the floor. Floor is carpeted. And I used an egg crate style camping pad. First week sucked. After that it got pretty good. But I think it works best if you sleep on your back and I generally end up sleeping on my side. It definitely didn't do anything bad to me. My skeleton felt pretty great. I don't think my sleep was as deep though. I'm now on a 4 inch futon pad and my dreams are much longer and more vivid so I assume sleep quality has gone up. I might waffle back and forth and try sleeping on the camping pad again just for fun.

This is why a firm spring mattress is the best middle ground. You just can't sink into a bed. I just stayed at a resort earlier this week and of course the expensive beds are too soft because retards will give bad reviews for firm mattresses. Laying on my $400 spring mattress right now, back feels great again.

Beds don't simply exist for "comfort", they exist because they're raised off the floor, preventing you from losing a lot of body heat, first of all, and preventing you from being attacked by rats and creepy crawlies in the night.

If you're having a lot of seizures when you're asleep then you probably have sleep apnea and stopping breathing is triggering your seizures. You should do a video eeg sleep study at the epilepsy clinic. Are you overweight which would cause obstructive sleep apnea? If you're not overweight, go visit the ENT doc and see if you have a deviated septum and/or enlarged tonsils/adnoids obstructing your breathing

I've slept on the floor in the past to make me get up earlier and not lazily lie in. It's good at that. However, despite the floor being carpet and putting a blanket on the floor, my neck and back would often hurt. I also don't think my sleep was as good on the floor.

Did it while homeless for many years and also before that due to no mattress.

I doesn't work out well for me because I also have breath problems that prevent me from laying on my back without asphyxiating.

If you can lay on your back then just sleeping on a yoga mat is a good idea.

I'm off the streets now and got a bunk bed set up and am waiting on my tempurpedic medium mattress to be delivered.

goggins tells a story about mystery illness and organ failure and all the doctor told him was that his psoas seemed tight. this is the crazy nigger who runs 100mile races. of course his psoas is tight. he was out of commission due to these health problems.

being goggins, he started stretching hours a day. he got better. the health effects of spinal problems are unknowable. this floor sleeping is something i used to do before i realized it was an overall nerd neck and rounding problem.

it's only going to get worse. I was a huge nerd so my life was more similar to a modern 20-something plus they stare at phones more. they're fucked. i had to fix my tailbone and untangle my whole lumbar to even get to my neck issues.

I used to love going to the village to visit family, because I could sleep on the floor vs a bed.

I had both options but they had floor mattresses that were thin and made of natural cotton and wool inside, even goose feather comforts, pillows and sown in by hand.

They also had oil lantern lamps, hydro tooz but in the evening in large family gatherings which were monthly we would light the lanterns throuout the house, no electric stuff, light the stove and make tons of snacks, sit, sip teas, snack, sing, talk, tell stories about family, ancestors cousins... neighbours, lore.

It was fun growing up in Europe in the 90s.

Sleeping on the floor was common in the village and people were fit and healthy.

To sleep on the floor there are rules, house must be clean, ventilated well, and no moisture.

They used to light stoves which kept the home dry, and the house would be vented daily in the winter even and windows were kept open a lot.

Sheets would be put out in the sun and comforters, mats... to air out well.

They take your bed by telling you to sleep on the floor.
Then they take your warm water saying cold showers are the best and good for health because it creates some brown fat in your body.
Then they take your home telling you it's best to sleep in a tent, outside because it's "good for the immunity".
They tell you your shoes are hurting your toes, so better go barefoot.
Don't eat meat, it's bad for the environment and for your health.
Little by little they sow these seeds, taking away everything, slowly meticulously.
It starts as a suggestion, it ends as a requirement.
It's tiresome.

what level of cope is this?
Sleeping on a minimal surface has shown benefits to back alignment and hip alignment only because it forces tendon mass to modulate. Tendons only respond to TOT.
Muscle mass would only be stimulated by the natural movements of the next day as your body modulates to the new tendon lengths over time.

If I don't sleep on the floor with a hard foam rollout, I wake up and my back is tight and shoulder is fucked. Started doing this about 6 yrs ago and my sleep quality is much better. The bare floor is too hard and lights up my pressure points, so I just need enough padding to stop that and that's it. If I try and sleep in a soft bed, my back lower back will be knotted up for the first half of the day. A full firm mattress usually treats me OK. But not as good as the floor and a hard foam mat.

I don't care about the bullshit manliness pandering, I started sleeping on the floor and every spine pain I had went away, I only wake up once to pee instead of the 3+ times I normally did and I wake up invigorated instead of tired. I'm never sleeping on foam again and the only problem of sleeping on the floor is poor air particle quality and if there's some roaming insect or critter they can get to you, and all you need to solve it is a 2x4 and some plywood to elevate a surface for you to sleep in.

Try sleeping on a big yoga mat it for a week. It might take 3 days or so for you to condition yourself to it. If it fails, all you need to do is to go back to sleeping in your regular bed.

Floor sleeper here. Pic related. That's Momiji on my "bed" I've slept on for the last 20 years. Yes, that is a single 3'x6' tatami mat. No, I do not sleep on a futon. I sleep directly on the tatami.
Can confirm it's great for your back, breathes better than any mattress, and is extremely durable a la I bought one 20 years ago and it's holding up fine.
For context, I sleep on my side but presumably there'd be no issue sleeping on your back. I meditate that way and don't run into any circulatory issues.
All that said, I do occasionally get circulatory issues if my arm is pinned under my head wrong. Just this morning I woke up and my left hand was numb. I'd say that happens once every other week.
The other potential downside is once you get used to it, normal mattresses feel wrong and I often find myself sleeping on the floor in hotel rooms and most carpets are not as comfortable as tatami. I recommend putting a sheet down first.

Also recommend wall stretches. Lean back into a wall with your hands up like you're a black man in a traffic stop.
Now very important you maintain the following points of contact with the wall throughout the stretch: back of the head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and back of the fingers.
The biggest tendency is for your head to bend forward but be mindful of your hands and elbows as well. Do it slow so you don't fuck this up because otherwise the stretch doesn't work.
Now raise your arms until yours hands come together above your head. Rinse and repeat.
You won't feel anything at first except a little silly but by the time you hit double digit reps you'll discover muscles stretching you didn't know you had. Berrigud for people hunched over keyboards all day.
