technically, shooting victims and burying them was cheaper and simpler than building extermination camps with gas chambers and crematoria, it would be logistically brutal and resource-draining.

But the reason why there is this whole dispute in the first place is because the Germans blew everything up before soviets arrived.
The gas chambers you see in camps today were built by soviets after the war. no one knows how the original ones looked like or if they even existed.
