I saw gel tests on youtube (garand thumb) where they put shirts in front of the gel blocks and the hollow part of the bullet (pistol caliber iirc) caught the fabric of the clothes everytime. So the end result is an fmj that doesn't penetrate as much as regular fmj. Hope this saves you money in the future.
