I think this is a very overlooked problem.
It used to be that people lived in small towns and communitarian families. Growing old meant that you became a figure of respect in your community, as someone who lived a full life and was full of widsom and experience.
But since 1945, the nuclear family, and then individualism, old people lost their privileges. They don't live with their children anymore. They don't have a local community to contribute to. Nobody respects them since the world has changed so much that their "wisdom" and "knowledge" are useless.
Being old in the modern world is just waiting for death. Distracting yourself with pointless entertainment until you die.
