Things will make more sense to you if you consider that any casualty number that comes out of Ukraine is completely bogus. Last time I checked the official Ukranian position is that they have only lost 35,000 troops KIA which is just obviously not true.

And they move slowly for two reasons, Ukrainian fpv defensive network, and russiam offensive doctrine, which is to soften up and flank once its been established that large offensive maneuvers cannot be effective. They will however constantly attempt larger maneuvers once a target area is suspected to be soft enough. Its by the book, they also suffer from outdated and ill kept logistic capabilities and of course corrupt middle level commanders. But they are advancing quite far since the collapse of avvidivka last year.

Well in this conflict it's pretty clear that platoon level offensives are the only way to advance outside of a few successful mechanized assaults, which are usually used once a specific area has been softend up.
