ISW and RBC are both citing reports that within the last couple days, Russian forces broke through near Rodynske and are moving to cut off the north side of the city.

There are also unconfirmed reports within the last day or so that Russian forces are pushing north near Udachne or Kotlyne to try and cut off the main road west.

I figure the AFU has maybe 2-3 days tops to withdraw before they get cut off, assuming they haven't been encircled already. If they have, well, they're kind of fucked.

Anyway, I suppose that the Ukrainian command knows this spiel by now (Lysichansk, Severodonetsk, Bakhmut, Avdeevka, Velika Novosilka, etc) and chose to prematurely depriorotize this frontline which effectively reduced their supplies and reinforcements to an absolute minimum.
HOWEVER, the ever watchful eye of Mordor spotted this carelessness and instead of doing the same ol' same ol' as the last 5 times decided to slip a few scouts in and after one (1) successful ambush the Ukies now don't dare cross the main street anymore. The main troopers then moved up and suddenly we're in the Pokrovsk arc that was scheduled for fall.

The only offensive operations the Ukrainians are doing currently are being conducted in Sumy in that tiny buffer zone the Russians carved out. They retook 2 or 3 villages, I believe. This is also where most of the Russian special units (vdv, marines) are located.
My guess is that the Ukrainian high command would rather spend time trying to destroy them than random Russian soldiers and as such priorotizes bumfuck places in Sumy over a logistics hub such as Pokrovsk in search of the ever-elusive great orc, the uruk-hai.

The Russians want the Ukrainians to keep putting men into it to try to prevent encirclement so they can be killed. The goal has been to grind up the Ukrainian military and destroy its capabilities so the Russians don't have to deal with it for decades.

If the US was smart they would've pressed for peace last year at the latest. Sincerely, tell the Russians that there wouldn't be any more arms shipments. Tell the vassals to do the same. A master class in attrition warfare.

Russia are maintaining constant pressure across the entire line with small groups (3s and 6s). The teams of 3 are highly trained special forces/storm troopers that take numerically superior positions (usually 4:1 odds). The small force size makes them hard to detect, and avoids mass casualty events. It essentially makes drones useless. Once they take a position, teams of 6 move in to hold it.

The point is to force Ukraine to keep troops in numbers everywhere. This means there's a lot of movement in the rare, a lot of training, and a lot of men standing in trenches--all of which are constantly being hit by artillery, drones, missiles, etc. Russia is attacking along one of the longest active combat lines ever, and taking less losses than the defenders. As I said, a master class in attrition warfare.

This doesn't work very well against really heavily defended positions, which is why the Russians are always flanking. The small encirclements you see on a map that close up are the heavily defended positions Russia won't bother to take head on. They'll go around, cut off supplies, and wait them out. Or, drop several 3 ton bombs on the large buildings until there's nothing to defend.
