Building roads in China is cheap and roads last so long that even such projects that likely won't repay themselves and only benefit local communities can be more affordable. The more of these infrastructure projects they have, the more rewarding it is to invest in the region.

China has a lot of energy and the governments there justify their value through large infrastructure projects, dating back to the Yellow River dam under Mao. The more infrastructure they build, more renown and credit is granted to the local governments / federal responsible and the companies they employ as contractors.

Yes, sometimes they'll build for the sake of building, but what is a government for if not to include all the population in the economic system rather than forcing them to move out of their historical homes to integrate with the economy?

I've had this debate a lot with libertarians, and while they are correct in theory, their conclusion that these distant villages should just perish and the people must move out leads to the destruction of the human being at a spiritual level which now plagues the cities (also leads to overcrowding, which is a challenge for all urban planning).

The chinese have consumed more concrete and aluminum since 2000s than the USA since 1776.

Any place you can easily reach have economic value. There are no places that are middle of nowhere, only isolated places.
No coast is really isolated so coastal places are always wealthy, unless theres some war or an artificial barrier like a border.
Inland places get developed when they have a road, train tracks or a navigable river.
If goods and people can enter an exit a region, its just as good as the coast, assuming the costs are kept much lower than the added value.

What you are saying does not apply to this infrastructure project, which was built probably for a) bragging rights (showing the West how stagnated they are), b) regional integration (which is what local governments in China often try to achieve and is hard in a country that is massive).

Whatever China is doing, we should be doing the same. I advise you to go to a Tier 2 or 3 in China, then compare it to Toulon, Marseille or Bologne in France. China is in another level when it comes to infrastructure. If it all will be useful one day or if it serves ulterior purposes, I do not know, but they are damn hell trying. Already better than us.

You go to France or Brazil, leave for three years and return, barely anything has changed (and things likely are worse). The same does not go in China.

99% of my experiences with the ones I knew personally were good. Even when I would go to the hood you might be surprised but in black neighborhoods I either was left alone or they shot the shit with me totally friendly, where I was most in danger was Hispanic neighborhoods from their gangbangers. I don't know if you know what getting "checked" means, but it's like "what you is" like what gang are you, remember, this is Chicago. I got threatened kind of regularly by them in my youth, but I knew how to handle it because I went to a mostly black primary school, and a mostly Hispanic secondary school.
