its biggest shortcoming was that there was no unified cohesive singular 'truth', but thats because its HOW 'GOD'/THE GODS WANTED IT TO WORK. understanding the gods is supposed to be a constantly evolving process, which evolved along with our understanding about the world. the different myths and different cultures were creating highly distinct and specialized peoples, but you could still go anywhere in the world and find your gods by some other name, because it was all part of the same, naturally occurring naturally undertaken process of human religion.
jews found that all offensive, and shut it all down. they tried to find the 'one' truth, as if that was even possible, and then set it in stone. and along the way, retarded everyone else along the way. so now, no longer is our understanding of 'god' constantly evolving and adapting with our understanding of the world, it has completely stagnated, and most people have even lost that natural ability to even seek out 'god' (its THE gods)
so really, ever since abrahamism, everyones been atheist in all but name
