Okay look, I've heard a lot about the Plaza Accords and the "Lost Decade" in Japan but I never saw Princes of the Yen or really delved into it. Not because I'm not interested but for some reason PotY didn't hook me right away even though I found the topic, and Japan itself, highly interesting and usually I really enjoy stuff related to it and its history. Now, I did see a PBS doc about Japan from the late 80s/90s, and yea, you can call it propaganda, but at least back then, PBS was far more informative and barely political. The government was also subsidizing it, when the west was not, break international rules (IIRC) for major first world countries. Trump talked about the back then the way people talk about China today, but it was even scarier because while China is rising and becoming more competent, Japan was arguable already more competent than the US in certain sectors.

I'm not taking a position on this, or arguing about the Plaza Accords, but from what I watched, there was a genuine fear of Japan taking over the US, and therefore, the world. I don't know what happened with the Plaza Accords, but Japan agreed to it.
