Why were trains the standard mode of transportation until 1940 or whenever, but ever since then the country has been too big for rail transit?

Because what's the point of trains when everyone has a car now. Getting a vehicle is cheaper than it's ever been. If you can't get a car there's tons of Chinese scooters and motorcycles now that are reliable enough for $1500.

They killed it on purpose. Also the last time I looked at talking a train I couldn't afford to take the 10 days off for travel alone because of how agonizingly slow passenger trains are in the US have become for what amounts to a 10 hour car ride or a 2 hour flight.

Planes. Once you can go cross country in 4-5 hours the appeal of sitting on a train for days really goes down. And trains could never handle the volume that air traffic handles today.
Clean, safe local rail could work though, but it's not really clean and safe anymore.
High speed rail suffers from politics. Everybody wants it to stop in their town.

Infrastructure such as high speed national mag lev rail was shelved in favor of billions of dollars to israel and Africa, and of course to pay for luxury hotels and flights for illegal immigrants. This is necessary because of the holocaust apparently.

The popularity of the automobile was wildly increasing as people learned how convenient they were to get them places. Even the dirt roads were casually traversed. Then the government realized how beneficial a national highway system would be so whichever president got the national highway act started to lay down half of what we have today.

It's got to stop at the stops to drop off and pick up passengers. It tends to take the same amount of time as rush hour traffic to get a person relatively close to their destination. Then, I guess you get on a bus or hire a taxi. What I don't understand is wtf makes people believe that a bunch of cars on specific tracks are going to somehow get massive amounts of people to their destination better than a vehicle capable of the same speeds that doesn't need tracks and can be used by each individual passenger. Passenger trains are only useful for cities so old they never planned for automobiles and are already locked into having a passenger train system.
