What I meant by regular use is as the OS drive.
A backup SSD is going to be powered until you fill it up and throw it in the closet.

Currently on Mint 22, and the pre-installed PDF viewer works fine.
It came with celluloid which decodes x265 and youtube videos out of the box.

Main drive which is live on my PC has two in RAID in case one fails. Follow the 3-2-1 rules for backup.
