Over the past years, the auto industry has lobbied congress to relax and alter CAFE standards. This was done to sell larger vehicles. Pickups and SUV’s got their own separate “light truck” category, and later body panel area was added to the formula. The results are current model year mid size trucks being as big as my old 2009 F250 and everything else being an egg-shaped crossover-SUV-wagon thing.

If the Dm AFE standards had remained unaltered, vehicles would have to be smaller to meet them. It was the relaxing of the standards that caused vehicle bloat.

If the standards disappeared, would vehicles shrink? After all, they were smaller in the past. Well, the auto industry are the ones who pushed for the changes, ostensibly so they could sell more vehicles. So the real question is did they change them so they could sell what they wanted to sell, and push big cars onto the population, or did they do it to meet consumer demand?

It has to be the latter. Small cars (and even small SUV’s and crossovers) exists. They don’t sell because people don’t want them. Scrap the standard, and everyone will keep buying bloat mobiles.
