This argument never sat well with me, it always felt like an overcorrection to me. Birds without their feathers are actually incredibly thin and spindly, even those that can't fly. Since they are direct descendants of theropods I feel like it's not far fetched to assume that they would have looked similar. Also, considering the earth used to be way warmer and more humid in those days I have a hard time imagining dinosaurs would have been able to regulate their body temperature if they had been that bulky.

Despite the name meaning "terrible lizard" they aren't lizards at all. They have almost no relation to lizards whatsoever. They are reptiles, and dinosaurs are a subset of reptiles, and birds are a subset of dinosaurs.

You can certainly make the case that not all animals that we categorize as dinosaurs were bird-like reptiles (e.g. triceratops, stegosaurus). But T-Rex was definitely bird-like. It's obvious just from looking at the skeleton what it was.

Assuming that feathers were an invention related to flight was a fair enough assumption at the time it was made, and from there the presumption that obviously flightless bird-dinosaurs would have not yet had feathers. But then we found fossil imprints of flightless bird-dinosaurs with feathers. So now it just becomes a pointless quibbling over whether THIS SPECIFIC flightless bird dinosaur did or didn't have feathers. Is it really necessary to prove each individual species of dinosaur was feathered before we recognize it as a likely common pattern for all dinosaurs that shared the obviously bird-like body plan?
