There was a video; I think it may have been made between the 1950's-1970's, which told a very cool story...

The town had been doing this for a decade. The video, among other things, sat down with the townfolk who enjoyed the heck out of the whole thing.

Nowadays these are always set up as weird asymmetric warfare scenarios like "protect this ridiculously vulnerable target of interest after a strike team completely disables all of your communications and logistics" or "prevent a small covert ops team from tagging vehicles"
