a first tone Ma is different from a Second tone Ma. it isn't the same word said differently, it is a different word said differently. and you learned chinese pronunciation poorly for this to be an issue after the first few months. you need a better teacher.

English is more tonal. For example, the biggest hurdle moving from Chinese to any Western language is the concept of Sarcasm, which Mandaring and Cantonese both lack entirely. Americans are unsubtle in their sarcasm, but all the ESL's I know from China had to literally study for years and still weren't sure when any English speaker is being sarcastic. I had to convince one that the concept of Sarcasm even existed.

English is Tonal. Mandarin is Tonal. If you want to see a dogshit language, look at pitch-adjusted languages like Japanese, whose one redeeming feature is that idioms have a corresponding tune that remains consistent across the entire nihongo-sphere.
