Because they only see what it is like to vacation there instead of working there. Japan is a beautiful country with well-mannered people, which differs from the experience that those who can afford to travel have experienced in America. Coming from isolating suburbs full of grumpy midwits or brutalist cities burgeoning with mentally ill crackheads, Japan looks like a paradise. It truly is a shame that the Japanese themselves have so little opportunity to appreciate it all, which is why their hospitality industry goes above and beyond - their guest might be taking the only vacation he is able to for that entire year.

I've been to Japan 3x for business. Beautiful country to visit, amazing service for tourists, safe, clean, orderly, convenient, 10/10. Its a fucking dystopia to live in.

Salaries are shit, women are ran through and psychotic, work hours are insane for younger folks and low for old boomers, seniority is the only thing that matters, entrepreneurship is discouraged, and the entire country is a welfare state thats in massive debt. All of these forces combine to make life a living hell for young men who are just trying to come up into adulthood. That's why a lot of young men tap out of the salaryman grind and live alone, working freeter-type jobs to simply get by on the cheap, and consume media as escapism. People in Tokyo told me that while they get similar days off to Europeans they're pressured not to use more than 1-2 at a time so you can have 4 day weekends but rarely get a 1-2 week trip unless you work for a western company. IIRC they also have to use time off for things like a plumber or going to the dentist whereas in the UK at least it's common to just go to the dentist and "make up the time". Also I think more of their days off are at predetermined times (e.g. golden week) whereas we have more "free" days.

Living in a tiny apartment really isn't a big deal when it's located in a massive, extremely safe city with widely available public transport.
The problem is when you live in a tiny apartment and spend 20 hours a day in it because there's no where to go and nothing to do. Or when you want to go to the corner store but have to wait a few hours for the homeless crackheads to clear out of the entrance to your apartment building and then step over their used needles and keep your head on a swivel because you're worried about getting mugged. That's what makes an apartment feel like a concrete prison. In a place like Tokyo your apartment is more or less just a place to sleep. You live your life outside in the city.
