That's basically a reverse version of Kissinger's detente and it's unworkable because Russia is stuck together with China in an increasingly deepening relationship. Russia isn't all that happy about it because it knows China wants to carve up Russia for itself over time, but in any case there's nothing that can be done about that.

What Mearsheimer advocates would only increase China's power. If the US decided that it's abandoning NATO then China has a greenlight to invade Taiwan. It would also create a much more dangerous world because you'd see multiple nuclear arms races cropping up because places like Taiwan, Ukraine, the Asian pacific countries, the KSA, etc would all decide they want nuclear deterrence. All of that would be unacceptable to China and every other big power which would result in more conflict in order to prevent this happening.

There's really no difference between that and advocating US isolationism. At least isolationists admit they want NATO disbanded and don't care about the US having hegemony.

IT is possible, that's why you have war in Ukraine (since 2014). The goal of this war is to humliate Russia and destroy Russian sphere of influence (especially in Central Asia). Why, you ask?

Breaking away of CA republics from Russia means they will ally with China sooner or later due to proximity. This means Russia will need help with containing growing sphere of Chinese influence. And thus it becomes viable ally. As long as Russia is strong and capable of maintaining its sphere of influence it will not ally with USA. The reason being, they prefer multipolar world order with Russia as one of its axes.

It is even funnier if you take my country (or other butthurtbellters) and try look from our perspective at this situation. We want to help USofA defeat Russia but we want to break it so hard it will be useless to USA as ally. The US is spending an insignificant amount of its budget on Ukraine. The annual DOD budget is over 1 trillion dollars now and rising annually in line with inflation, that's the budget before the war in Ukraine began as well.
