tariffs are a regressive tax. they disproportionately impact cheap goods (imported from china/taiwan/etc) which low-income consumers buy. high-end imports (eg from the EU) have lower tariffs, even after the recent hike, so rich customers will pay less of their income as a percentage when making purchases. on top of that, poor people spend a larger fraction of their income, because they earn little more than the cost of living. this is a stealth tax hike for the poor.

Low income people spend vast majority of their income on food, housing and transport and all of those are or should be 100% american. Tariffs are specifically a progressive tax because they effect unique luxury goods the most, you can't buy a Ferrari that isn't imported but you can buy potatoes that were grown right next door.

Also it should be said that tariffs benefit the poor the most because the poor will be the people who benefit from the jobs they generate. An unemployed person getting a low skill job in a factory making microwaves that wouldn't exists without tariffs improves his life way more than getting a microwave for 10 bucks less. You won't see a wealthy person jumping for a chance to work in a factory, they will whine that the Ferrari costs more though.

>Low income people spend vast majority of their income on food, housing and transport and all of those are or should be 100% american
the US doesn't have the climate to grow:
>coffee
>cacao
>vanilla
>coconut
>avocado
>pineapple and many other tropical fruits (outside hawaii, which can't supply the whole country)
and many other foods that are small luxuries for a low-income person. now, you may say "lol just don't eat that," but this is precisely my point. poor people will have to give up on some of the nice things that they have as a result of this policy.

even setting aside things that are impossible to grow in the states, we don't have the mass production capabilities we'd need to supply things like dishware, furniture, and other household goods at scale. at least for several years, all of that would just get more expensive for everyone. this hurts the poor more than the rich.

>the poor will be the people who benefit from the jobs they generate
manufacturing isn't the labor-intensive industry it was in the 50s. lots of lines can run with as few as 10 people in a massive warehouse. injection molding used to involve a lot of handiwork; now it's almost fully automated. this is the real reason manufacturing jobs are going away, more so than globalization (though cheap labor overseas does still play a role)

>the US doesn't have the climate to grow:
Poor people don't spend most of their income on vanilla, they buy vanillin which is made in USA and spend vanishing amounts on that too. The same with everything on that list except Coffee. Actual poor people buy american potatoes and corn and meat and sustain themselves with that, USA also produces incredible amounts of fruits like apples which anyone crying about tariffs can easily switch to and they will end up richer than they began with (since apples are very cheap vs expensive avocados and vanilla shakes). The share of income they spend on coffee and the potential impact tariffs have (again tariffs are mostly paid by the exporting country to retain market share) are vastly dwarfed by the jobs they generate.
>poor people will have to give up on some of the nice things that they have as a result of this policy.
This is mostly wrong, tariffs are mostly paid by foreign exporters in an effort to retain marker share. The fact that some goods may be somewhat more expensive doesn't mean that it's a regressive tax, tariffs are very much a progressive tax when ever they are a tax at all. More to the point they actually raise the standard of living of poor people the most because of the new jobs. Someone graduating from unemployed to employed will be able to afford much more imported products than someone staying unemployed.
>we don't have the mass production capabilities we'd need to supply things like dishware, furniture, and other household goods at scale.
Poor people can in fact work in factories that make dishware or furniture. They don't have to materialize immediately to benefit the poor the most.
>manufacturing isn't the labor-intensive industry it was in the 50s

>tariffs are mostly paid by foreign exporters in an effort to retain marke[t] share
not how tariffs work. the tax is paid by the importer, which in this case is a US retailer. retailers then raise prices accordingly, so their margins don't shrink.

Due to my high intelligence due to being white I just happen to be correct. You don't have to listen to me when I blow you out this easily.
>nope, they buy highly-processed crap with ingredients from all corners of the earth.
America produces vast majority of it's own calories, when something is "processed" that means it's american corn treated with chemicals which was grown in America, not that it was expensive Vanilla that then got treated down to somehow be cheap which makes absolutely no sense. You are so far out of touch with how poor people live it's hilarious.

>not how tariffs work
That's exactly how tariffs work. Tariffs have been studied for centuries and that's how they always worked and always will.
>retailers then raise prices accordingly, so their margins don't shrink.
If companies can just "raise their prices" without impacting their business they would be doing that with or without tariffs. Why not slap another +100% to increase your profits too?
The answer: consumers are price sensitive and don't care how much it costs you to make something, they can and will switch to a cheaper alternative and let you go bankrupt if you raise prices, most likely that cheaper alternative is an american business which hires Americans.

>factories take years to set up.
Then the tariffs should have been instituted years ago. The fact that they help poor people in the future doesn't mean they don't help poor people. More over there's lots of capacity in american manufacturing that is just waiting for customers. Hardly any american manufacturer runs in 3 shifts but with more domestic orders they could spin that up in the matter of months by just hiring more workers.
You keep backpedaling from your regressive tax argument, I take it you conceded that point however so I won't pursue it further.

Every single one of his tariffs is about to be thrown out by a federal appeals court, which began hearing arguments two days ago. He doesn't have the power to tariff based on his feelings, or some perceived trade deficit. Tariffing is exclusively the prerogative of Congress, not the Executive. The Executive can only institute tariffs for national emergencies. None of which this qualifies as. It's open and shut. He's been trying to leverage tariff threats to create trade deals Nations won't be able to get out of after the tariffs are tossed out by the courts. And now he's trying to create popular demand for them via bribery. Of course nothing would ever come from it even if he could. There would be no checks. Grifters gonna grift.

Giving corporations any benefit doesn't make sense anymore. There was a time when there was an argument for trickle-down economics, even though it was pretty flimsy at best. But now there's absolutely no reason to do anything but oppress corporations financially as much as possible. This is because all job creation simply goes to the lowest bidding third worlder instead of countryman. The success of corporations is completely disconnected from the citizenry now. So they should be milked as much as humanly possible.

How would that even happen when tariffs don't even cover existing tax cuts, which the rich benefit the most from?

Yes, but not the Zionist, they’re coming around and are just like us now, it’s the jesuits, and they are lying about our job growth numbers. I haven’t seen a single Mexican in my city in the last two months and everyone’s working now, all my friends moved out and started getting homes or apartments. Life is so much better now and groceries are dropping prices like a rock, I just filled my fridge for $100. Glad trump didn’t buy the shit and just fired to economist fucking with job growth numbers

>and many other foods that are small luxuries for a low-income person. now, you may say "lol just don't eat that," but this is precisely my point. poor people will have to give up on some of the nice things that they have as a result of this policy.

Fifty years ago these were luxuries for middle class people. I'm screencapping this for those threads were Millennials try to claim that Boomers had it easier.

Who gives a fuck what it's called? The money was already spent and has to be raised to be paid back. If xoomers don't like it, they shouldn't have run the debt up to $36 trillion.
We've already seen in this same trade war how much power the debt gives foreigners over the US, so the "debt doesn't matter" meme should be dead and buried.
