How I Quit Masturbating
I haven’t masturbated in half a year. I did it by wearing a rosary to bed every night. The idea was that if I could feel the presence of a physical object and see it if I ever opened my pants with the intention to masturbate, I would be reminded more intensely and vividly that I was sinning against God and I would be aware of another sin: sacrilege.
There are a few more things to consider with the rosary I wear to bed. Firstly, it is of sturdy construction; the first one I tried was chainlink and it broke and the current one that has lasted me nearly half a year is made with cord. Secondly, it has been blessed by a Catholic priest and therefore a sacramental, although not a grace-conferring sacrament, they are such as stated per the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 1677: “Sacramentals are sacred signs instituted by the Church. They prepare men to receive the fruit of the sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life.”
Thirdly, it has a Saint Benedict’s medal, which has a reputation for warding off demons and sin is guided greatly by the influence of the demonic.
I find that the best prayer to avoid masturbation is not “Lord, may I never masturbate again”, but “Lord, may I never want to sexually sin again” because it is more broad and it focuses on the will, not the action caused by the will; you can still never masturbate again and constantly want to.
I wear my rosary under my clothes because I think I am not worthy of being seen wielding the sign of my saviour; if I make one wrong move in public, I think I could scandalise the entire Christian Church for at least one person and that would be too much.
