Cancer is our own cells turning on us.

That is uncontroversial. Everyone should know that by now. But what many don't seem to understand is that dying of old age is the trade-off for not dying of cancer in the womb, or within a short period after we are born.

Each cell contains a complete copy of our genome. Every time a cell divides to repair damage, that DNA also splits, half going to each daughter cell. The DNA is rebuilt by enzymes until both daughter cells have a complete copy again.

Trouble is that every time the DNA divides like that, a piece is torn off each end. This would be immediately catastrophic if it were information being torn away and daughter cells got progressively more damaged DNA copies. But instead, we have repeating sequence of TG alleles that are torn off instead. Once the 100 or so of these 'telomeres' are down to only 1 or 2 left, the cell refuses to divide further, though it still functions.

This prevents cells from going rogue and replicating with abandon (cancer) but the implication is that as we age, more and more of these non-replicating but otherwise functional cells build up until the majority of our cells that can divide will refuse. We therefore get grey hair, dim eyesight, brittle bones, and then the flu kicks our ass and we're done.

The urge to live is extremely strong as evidenced by the vast majority of people who chose to live in pain, or through the degradation of infirm old age, rather than suicide. But the decision to continue living for another is also strongly influenced by fear and/or difficulty of killing yourself. Guns make it as easy as you're going to get. Pills sound better and that's what women choose, but there's the fear of getting drowsy and knowing you're going to fall asleep in 5 minutes. That's a psychological fear rather than a physical one.

Anyway my point is Clott owns guns. If I was going through his shit and had access to a gun I'd probably cling to life 99% of the time, but what would happen that 1% of the time you think it's better to end things and you do in fact have a "button" you can press.
