Everywhere I go I see 90% of people in public with headphones on or a stupid Bluetooth earpiece. Not only is it anti social and rude behavior but it is also bad for your hearing. Personally haven't used headphones at all except when I had a gym membership and before that it was back in middle school when I had a portable CD player or one of the first ipods. Headphones kill random life changing experiences in real life and make you unapproachable if you use them. It is rude and disgusting behavior and people wonder why everyone in the US is so lonely? Every woman I see walking by themselves anywhere has them on or even people on their gay ass electric bikes and scooters, people who are in stores etc. People who do this are part of the reason society today fucking sucks. These people have no balls to be in the present moment and at the same time kill their own situational awareness of their surroundings. I hate them and hope they all perish

You assume to much from the NPCs. Most of them would be incapable of actual engagement in real time.

Best part is when they come to talk to you and presumably have the music turned off but they don't bother to take the earplugs off. Happens all the time at my gym and it bothers me for some reason. Having your ears stuffed while speaking to someone (especially at your own initiative) sends a message that you're not important enough to pay full attention to.

If you really want societal upheaval to reverse the current trend you need to completely stop giving people individual smartphones. Return to mass media for information and cultural exchange. Use giant screens in central public squares to showcase movies and other events so that people are forced to come out and interact like the old days.
