Communism's attempt at recreating the mysticism that they sought to eradicate a few decades earlier. It's like the Saint Stalin shtick that they did in Russia. At one point you have to realize that your ideology reproduces itself through lower class peasants or neo-peasants working in a factory, and that these peasants cannot cope with their ugly life unless promised a divine payoff at the end of the tunnel, so you figure out that a bit of ideological dissonance is better than these peasants overthrowing your gray and rusty dystopia, so you do a 180 and implement the same religion as a tool of control that you just overthrew in your revolution. They restored it but it was like some key component was missing and people weren't quite moralized yet - Vanga was the missing eschatological element that the communist world needed, and so Vanga's image was strategically build up and propagandized all over the bloc, promising you an eschatological destruction of the evil capitalist west and a rapture for all of the righteous east. And all you had to do was, check this out, trust the plan.
