They don't understand anything, they just use people who do understand things to make themselves successful, so when you take away those people or they go into retirement and the next generation hasn't been prepared to replace them, it's as you imagine a shitshow, so now they're getting curb stomped by China and don't know what to fucking do. They have built philosophies around it, and when they approach death they feel closer to their spiritual, ethical and ideal needs.
They think they are doing the good of some people (past, present or future) or some spiritual entities by doing so, and they hope this will help with either their memory or their stay in the afterlife.

I think neuroticism is the basic emotion underlying ambition - that is, status anxiety - in general. The little brain worm behind the relentless drive to secure ever more power and prestige for its own sake is ultimately the fear of someone else with more of it using it against you, or not living up to some expectation that was imposed on you by others, or a basal gnawing insecurity that causes you to feel the need to "prove" that you're not "a loser"
