The scary part, it's more comfortable than you'd think. It's really easy to lower your expectations and say "this isn't that bad", because it isn't that bad. If you have money.
Colombia had the same shopping malls, and hippie dippy stores selling crystals and hemp clothes that you have in the United States. It's just all the exteriors of the tall buildings were filthy, like they'd never been power washed, and the people drove like maniacs.
That's another sign of the times.
I'm seeing a lot more "Latin American road etiquette" lately. It's routine now to see someone cut across lanes to take an exit too late after they've already passed the exit markings. Scooters are everywhere. Helmet laws are no longer enforced apparently. I see whole families crammed onto electric scooters. Little kids with no helmets hanging off of their parents backs and sitting in their parent's laps with no cares in the the world.
