I used to listen to a lot of podcasts from game journalists and they were pretty open about the issues they had with access. It was a pretty well known thing that if you didn't give a game good reviews you wouldn't get the exclusive preview next time from the publisher. And actually regular non-entertainment journalism basically also works like that. So "ethics in games journalism" always sounded like such a joke to me, like what are we doing here, this is entertainment.

Though I actually don't really have any interest in trying to dismantle this old narrative that people have so much invested in because ultimately I am on their side of the culture war. In the beginning of the scene you had creators like Cactus (who I got to meet briefly) and I was so thrilled that Hotline Miami was good and provocative enough to make people mad. But then those same butthurt people started taking over the cultural institutions around this hobby. I think people lacked the language to describe what was happening and it was just easier to focus on the "scandal"

Interesting take, but the bigger factor is yet again market forces; AAA casualization of games left the door wide open for a truly challenging and rewarding game. It's also yet again a product of the limitations of the medium (I've been incorrectly typing "genre" when I mean medium) meaning that it was easy to become a focal point for gamers and then a genre unto itself. There's no equivalent in other mediums. Maybe Pearl Jam?
