I've been there. 5 blocks out of downtown it's a zombie movie of crack fiends. Then where are are whole areas that are nothing but that. And no matter where you are you could be robbed any time. Rio is even more dangerous and disfunctional but at least the people there are hot and its fun.

I visited once.
It was very, very big.
It smelled badly in many places, like urine.
A surprising number of mopeds.
Cool graffiti.
Very cheap. I got a full meal for like 5 US dollars.
Lots of gates and barbed wire around very meh houses, but I guess they might be considered nice there.
I've thought more and more about Brazil lately. I'm largely jealous of you all down there. I wish you all the best. Clean up the place a bit, have more self respect, and be less annoying on the internet/games and you'll be widely envied before long, I think.

Poor countries are poor because they do not innovate and do not produce high quality goods. Poor economies depend on exporting raw materials. You should know how it works, your country works the same way.

Most of their natural amenities like beaches are actually ruined by raw sewage. I imagine hiking isnโ€™t safe in many areas. Every natural attraction Iโ€™ve been to in the 2nd world is usually ruined by unmitigated hawker stalls and scammers wandering around.
