The Texas state legislature, at the behest of Governor Abbott and President Trump, are voting on redrawing the congressional districts of the state to create five more safe Republican seats in Congress. The Democratic state legislators, in protest, have fled Texas for Illinois, denying the legislature of quorum, therefore preventing any votes to be held. Governor Abbott has said he will declare their seats vacant if they do not return but I do not believe there is any legal mechanism for him to do so.

Internal GOP polling is currently showing a bloodbath in 2026, so Trump panicked and publicly told Abbott and the Texas GOP to redraw districts in the GOP's favor. They're legally allowed to do so but it's a fairly unprecedented move and will be seen as partisan escalation due to how blatantly Trump openly demanded Abbott to hand him five House seats.

Democrats are delaying a vote on redistricting by not showing up for work, which legally prevents the new law from being voted on. But the governor is allowed to arrest them and force them to show up, and maybe even kick them out of the legislature entirely.
