But that logic is wrong because people forget that there are 5 phases of life and only 1 of those 5 has a power stroke in it. First there's the men and women demographic. Only men are going and not coming back which means now your original 1% quote is a full 2.5% quote.

But it keeps on going see because of those 50% males, 1/5 are infants, 1/5th are children, 1/5th are useful adults, and the last 1/5th are useless old adults.

Which means now of the 125million russian population, half are men, 65m, and only 1/5th of the 65m/5 = 13m men are available for soldiering activities.

Of Russia's 125m population, only 13m are "power stroking" individuals, needed for all the things, 2 million of those are gone.

Soldiers weren't on vacation. There was a treaty with Georgia, allowing to deploy peacekeepers in Ossetia. Georgia attacked peacekeepers after Saakashvili was goaded by Bush administration to eliminate our soldiers (who weren't heavily equipped, as they didn't even expect to fight) and then dig in and defend on a very convenient terrain (mountains).
International comission concluded that Georgia is at fault for starting the war (although also blames Russia for escalating it).
