So recently I wandered through a large shopping mall and on my 20 minute trip passed by a security guard standing in the middle of an arcade and then 3 teams of3 ,so 10 security guards all wearing body armour. In Canada, where guns are scarce. My impression is they are neither there for fear of terrorism or even shoplifting. So why are they there? When I was younger the mall was more than a place to buy stuff, it was a vibrant last stretch of community. So I'd argue that the security presence is actually mostly due to the paranoia of the powers that be that social interaction might happen at their malls.
