He could have saved us
We abandoned him.

The court really had to struggle to figure out what his one line of javascript code was doing inside that ahref tag, and whether or not his incantation of a super.changeparenttag.load('press add friend $thisid');" was a computer worm that threatened the stability of mankind, or just a prank bro.

The leaned too hard on the "omg it's a computer wizard we're all going to die", because the court didn't know that HTML wasn't in fact in control of the nuclear launch codes.

Was really sad to hear that the entire music catalog getting purchased or controlled by Timberlake? That seemed really weird. Not where I wanted my tunes ending up.

So much better than anything that's come since.
Going back 20 years would be nice all round.

Around 2003, when I was in junior high school, my friend and I discovered myspace which was brand new and not yet super popular. We actually messaged Tom a bunch of times about how the website worked because me and my friend were big nerds interested in computers. Tom was really nice and usually responded to us, and even sent us pictures of the myspace servers and code. Glad he got a bunch of money for his product, he was truly a pioneer and kind.

I was a MySpace metalcore kid. In bands. Banging scene chicks. Making songs with really long, stupid names. I miss those days so bad.

>Anderson said: "Before [the acquisition], I could do whatever I wanted. Now it takes more time to get people to agree on things.
>quoted an unnamed News Corp executive as saying: "Tom [Anderson] was responsible for the product, but ended up being a complete bottleneck

This is what they say when you say no to their malicious (or maliciously stupid) ideas.
Executive want product that do exactly as they say.

Early Internet felt like you'd changed upon a secret world of really smart, insanely cultured and witty people.

...
...

And now look at us.
Entire thing has been turned into the roving eye of Sauran and just one giant resume, essentially. Sucks.

There really hasn't been a better network.
The addition of IRC applets to Myspace wouldn't have been difficult.
The addition of saved chat pages would have taken more server space.
There is, and was, a legit question of how long it could operate without advertising. At some point you're server stacks in warehouses burning gW.
A BBS that kept you live even if you weren't on the internet.
