When I was a kid in the '90s I would get chased by adults for simply skateboarding down a sidewalk, they hated it that much. that's not true at all. skate culture was never mainstream except for maybe a short couple of years in the early 2000s. most people who skated started in middle school then quit by highschool. probably 75% of my town skated in 6th-8th grade, we would have like 30 kids on one street skating ramps we built. but by the time everyone had gotten pretty good, and gone to high school most of them stopped as if they were "too cool" for it anymore. maybe like 5 people total skated at my high school. from that point on. you no longer met new friends at school but at the skatepark insteaad because people from surrounding towns went there. it was definitely not "cool" or mainstream to skateboard at 16+ years old. it requires too much dedication and you become pretty one-dimensional.

I stopped for a couple of years in my late 20s and my knees immediately got pretty creaky. they have never been the same since, but a lot of it is due to losing the flexibility of the tendons and the muscles shrinking. once you build that shit back up it's not as bad, but it's like when old guys finally retire and their body turns to shit immediately. everyone I know who has skated since a kid and never quit for any real period of time has zero problems with their body.

it really depends how often you skate as a kid. most people only skated every couple of days, and didn't push themselves. but the ones who go to the skatepark every afternoon and do nothing else get good quick. the only real filter is your fear threshhold. once you get over that you can get really good. lack of confidence will not allow you to commit to landing stuff. it's not about getting good anyways, that just comes naturally over time. it's about having fun. the only downside to skateboarding like I mentioned earlier is that if you're all in, you care about nothing else. you don't care about making friends that don't skate. you don't do all the normal "core" teenage stuff in the same way everyone else does. that's probably why lots of skaters seem like trashy people after high school. rarely do you see someone who went to sollege for 8 years getting a serious degree that still skates. it's a double-edged sword of a hobby because it consumes most of your life. but it's better than lots of other things you can do in life. lots of kids don't skate now because they don't do outdoor/active shit in general.
