It is easy to come up with an alternate proof for a highly accessible domain of math, like Pythagorean theorem, using a non-parsimonious method. Most wouldn’t even bother.

But identifying a counter example to a conjecture like this, when others haven’t, suggests actual competence.

Producing a counterexample to a conjecture is the same as solving it. A "conjecture" is a statement which asks to be either proved or disproved. What is questionable is the magnitude of the conjecture (never heard of it before) and whether it was done for her(?) or by her. I tend to think it was done at least in part by the student, but I also think that this was preconceived as trans propaganda. So the magnitude of the problem is overblown and the publicity for it is driven by politics.

There are fields like abstract algebra where people just invent gibberish that only they are interested in and nobody else gives a fuck - this is not one of them. This is a legit nice work with many people who are interested in it because it relates to their own work.

Even most professors will never do anything like this (resolving a named conjecture) or maybe only ONCE in their lifetime when their stars align, you genuinely need to find the right problem (pure luck) and be creative/smart enough to come up with a counterexample or proof.

The problem is serious but it is not a top-level conjecture. It is implied by more famous conjectures such as Stein's conjecture, but it was not worked on by a sufficient number of high-level people to justify it as a major problem. It is indeed impressive nontheless if he did it completely himself.

UC Berkeley has a talented high schooler program, i.e. they pair up talented high schoolers (often homeschool "geniuses") with faculty to work on problems over the summer. A previous famous example is Evan O'Dorney (who also solved a conjecture as a high schooler, among being well-known for other achievements such as gold medal at IMO and placing in the top 10 of Putnam as a high school senior). In any case it is entirely possible that RZ did the brunt of the work and left it to Cairo to work out the details. Political stunts like this happen all the time in modern academia and since Cairo is jewish it is entirely possible that RZ did this at the behest of behind-the-scenes forces in the hopes of advancing his own career. Still it's impressive if he solved the problem itself and it was extremely hard. My guess is the problem wasn't that hard, that most researchers attacking it were stuck on one approach and didn't have the perspective to consider a special family of pathological examples which led to the counterexample.

Fermat's conjecture stated that there are no positive integer solutions (x,y,z) to x^n + y^n = z^n if n > 2. If you proved that there was such a solution to x^3 + y^3 = z^3 then yes, you would have disproved the conjecture. The pool of people seriously working on a given problem can be quite small, as was the case here. I has never heard of the conjecture before and suspect only people in a relatively small subarea of harmonic analysis had. In any case, I wouldn’t be surprised if the counterexample came from offshoots of RZ’s work, he is a harmonic analyst (and a good one at that) and this is right up his alley.
