I can visualize things vividly if I concentrate on that specifically, but when I say "abstract thought" I'm thinking more about spatial analogies or grasping purely abstract relationships (e.g. comprehending that A is to B as X is to Y where there is no specific word or concept for it).

The point of a conceptually rich language is that it hides complexity behind abstractions. That lets you reason about more complex things implicitly but at some point this degenerates into mechanistic thinking where you are no longer operating with meaning but with a sort of "syntax" that defines how one abstraction connects to another abstraction through a third abstraction.
