Even if you're not dimming, the rise/fall time of LEDs is way faster than incandescent. I.e., a piece of hot filament cools down more slowly than a LED can switch off. There ends up being more flicker in any scenario.

Meh. I prefer LEDs. Something over 90% of an incandescent bulb's output is heat. Something over 70% of an LED's output is light in the desired spectrum.

Literally the only application an incandescent bulb is better for is as a condensation preventer inside a gun safe, and that's because of its heat output.

Yeah, but (1) it's an older type of carbon filament that is extremely dim and so nobody wanted to buy those once tungsten filaments came out, and (2) it's been on almost continuously, thereby avoiding the heating/cooling cycles that break filaments.

Just like nobody uses the original red LED any more because it's a really poor light producer, everyone stopped using the carbon-filament bulbs because they were barely more than nightlights to keep you from tripping when you got up to take a leak.

>a bulb that can run 24/7 for 20 years, that I'd pay good money for.
Really not difficult to make. In fact some ancient bulbs still run.
Why? Because they have a thiccc filament and run at lower power = are even more inefficient than normal incandescent lamps.
In terms of filament it's simply a tradeoff: long life versus "high" (low) efficiency, but there is a second factor:
>the quality of the vacuum
And this is purely a matter of cost (and weight, but who cares what a bulb weights?).

I also give you the protips:
The issue with incandescents is run time; the limiting factor. They die after a given number of hours. 5000h is realistic enough.
Switching them on and off however isn't a real problem, meaning they are good for cases wheree the light is on only for short period of time.
Now with LEDs; they can burn 10 or 20 times as long, or longer; there's less of a hard age limit to them,
but they are hurt by being turned on, lasting only a limited number of on/off cycles before the begin to fail.
In other words LEDs are good for cases where the light shines for long periods, but not when it's constantly switcheed on and off.

not at all. i bought a stash for my self made light installations, though these are for bright mode only and it's not that many. for room light i use a number of oldfashioned 5v, 6w bulbs in antique bicycle lamps, also self made. monitor light is a nuisance though. have you ever noticed the kind of sharp shadows a led produces? they make me sick and i can't even say it's due to flicker. it's just shitty light and filtering it to a certain colour or 'temp' doesn't change its character.
