It traumatizes kids even in cultures that accept it. The trauma isn't shame-based, it's inherent.

Also, pedophilia is an epidemic among conservatives who "hate pedophilia". A pedophilia problem in society makes it easier for pedophilic conservatives to "prove" they should be trusted with kids, by giving them an obvious enemy to rail against. This is why religious leaders are both more likely to be pedophiles than the general public AND reliably outraged by the supposed pedophilia of their opponents.

One thing that makes me feel like my hatred of pedophilia is likely to be correctly understood as sincere is that I make no specific effort to interact with minors. I'm not doing it to prove that I should be trusted with children. I believe children should be safe and happy, but I don't want to interact with them myself.
