This is the core problem. We assumed that if we gave women jobs, and stuff. Productivity would go up, but they'd behave like men, get money settle down with a guy/chad etc. whatever and have kids. but women aren't like that. Like for most of human history, whether a woman had a kid was largely not her decision. If a male that's bigger and stronger than you wants sex. Another male is the only thing that's going to stop him. Your choice doesn't matter.
So basically once in 9 months you ARE going to have a kid.

It's feminism and its consequences: gender equality, female education, female employment.
It has nothing to do with the economy or culture. There are piss poor countries with 7 children per woman, and rich countries with infinite financial incentives that can barely get over 1.4.

The real cause of falling birth rates is that legally and financially independent women simply refuse to settle with average guys. And even when they do (e.g. to take advantage of the guy's money), the marriage inevitably ends up in divorce. Independent women don't want to be an average guy's housewife/babymaker.

That's why every single civilized society in history was patriarchal. If you don't legally/financially/physically force women to marry average guys, they'll all orbit around Chads and leave the bottom 80% completely sexless.

Traditions are merely solutions to forgotten problems. After 4000 years of civilization, the world has forgotten why female sexuality needs be strictly controlled. By removing the tradition and allowing women to be free, the problem (hypergamy) appeared anew.
