This is why my peers say to me when they find out I own my own house.
I say “yeah” but in reality, I am not lucky. I only got my house because I did two things: I saved for a down payment and I used a VA home mortgage.
This is an option available to everyone, so long as you serve in the armed forces honorably and aren’t profligate. Sure, the costs involved with purchasing a home are higher than ever but there are still ways. Why don’t people do them?

I own two homes, with no debt. I paid cash. This isn't a flex. Homes are cheap in the right places. The trick is to buy the absolute cheapest home you can live in first. That allows you to save up what you would have spent on rent for your next one.
I have never had a mortgage, and I never will, because I am not a debt slave. Having no debt means you save money you would have spent on interest for the home too.

I just lived with my parents during in college and pocketed all the scholarship money. Don't have much sympathy for people who traveled halfway across the country to go to their "dream school" and party for 4 years and are now 150k in debt and eternally relegated to rentoid status.

VA loan is the same thing as an FHA really.
everyone gets that. the only difference is that the VA loan can be done with no down payment, ensuring that your monthly payment is very high vs someone who does a down payment.
there's probably more to it, maybe we have a propertyfag online that can explain the difference.
but afaik, don't let recruiters convince you the VA loan is anything special.

Because parents and schools both completely fail to teach kids how buying a house works and why it's so important. Really they fail to teach kids about finances in general, how mortgages work, how rent works, how interest works, how to use debt strategically, etc. I eventually figured it out and I'm better off than most now, but I could have easily started 10+ years earlier and it's one of my biggest regrets. Even though I should be able to pay off my house within around 12 years with extra principal payments I'll probably never be able to retire given how fucked, unstable and uncertain the future and economy are right now. Speaking of how fucked everything is, that's another big factor. Why fucking bother when at some point on the next 5-10 years we'll probably see one or more of the following:

>solar cataclysm - everyone intuitively senses some impending doom but few know why
>total enslavement of the human mind via AI, already happening but most are too stupid to recognize what is happening
