I feel like videogames have had a more destructive effect on my life than any other thing. It started when I was gifted a ps2 with the clone wars game when I was 12 or so and it's been a curse since then. I gave up on everything else I enjoyed. There's a bunch of things I guess I could have been good at. I could never enjoy anything because I'd just be planning my next gaming sesh. I lost money, relationships, all sorts of things over it. I'm almost 31 and I just wasted two days playing a harcore numidia campaign on rome total war. I'm genuinely beginning to think I can't stop. Maybe my brain is fried or something. I'm never gonna get anywhere because of this retarded low effort addiction. Petty as it is, I can't escape it. I will never be proud of myself.

You need hobbies that are relaxing. The problem with video games is that it is a highly stimulating dopaminergic activity sort of like gambling. The upshot is addiction, mood swings, social isolation and poor sleep cycles. Try substituting gaming with relaxing activities. Do some reading, drawing or solve a jigsaw puzzle.

I also was reading many books, because that was the thing nerd boys did before the internet.
At the 90s the ps1 was amazing, that made me play a lot more. Then came the internet. The porn got me first, then chatrooms, then 4chan. Since that I haven't done much else. No job, no gf, virgin, just some other nerds as friends (I see them 2 or 3 times a year in person) and still living with my old parents.

I used to game too, competitively. I won $15k playing COD:MW2 before there was even much of an escorts scene. I was the first person to get Shadowmourne on my very competitive server (KelThuzad). I also had the #3 world dps for my warrior, and the merciless gladiator title (#1 pvp team in battlegroup).

This was back in high school. I am now making $175k/year as a principal engineer for a major city. I have a paid off house, 2 kids, and a loving wife. Video games taught me hard work, good communication, perseverance, and strategic thinking that carries over to other aspects of my life. I have enough of self control to give up video games when they no longer serve me.

You're an addict and you would have been addicted to worse things than vidya if you hadn't started. Consider it that way.

My family was lower middle class, but I still got most of the things I needed and wanted. No fancy vacations or ski trips. For early childhood/teenage years, having friends is important. If you lived in the burbs and locked yourself up in your room gaming, that wouldn't be great.
