Japan literally has less GDP growth but QoL is better than in the USA.

Can someone help make sense of this?

Tourism and public works. They printed a ton of money in the 80s then went on a public works spending bender in the 90s. Around 90% of Japan's current skyline was built after the 1990s and the cities weren't even hooked up to sewers until the 2000s. The QoL is mostly due to the cities being brand new while western cities are old and people want detached housing rather than spending money on maintenance. The US basically dumped all of their T-bonds into making Japan a model society for Asia in the 90s and it worked, you can go into virtually any big city in SEA and it's better than most US cities now. Mostly because like 80% of the US lives outside of big cities now.

You've watched anime. You know what the life of a salaryman is like.
Those fuckers get overworked, then they HAVE to go drink with their boss and socialize, then they enter a packed train to go home
Shit is so bad that the average nip male has is on a perpetual peter pan syndrome, that's why they like anime and isekai and waifus so much

GDP is a scam, simple as.
It's a metric of economic output, i.e. the whole country, every single business.
Banks and insurance count. Military counts.
If you measure a country by GDP growth and a bank gave out TONS of loans willy-nilly, they report those loans +8% as GDP.
Government took your money (taxes) and buys a trillion dollar of rockets with it? GDP + 1 trillion
It doesn't measure how that pie is divided.
GDP per capita also doesn't mean everyone gets this flat amount, no no.
GDP per capita is basically a measurement of the enslavability of the populace.
QoL is many things coming together, in my 34 years of experience as human I find the most beneficial factors to be
- high-trust society
- low bureaucracy (the faster things "just werk" the better)
- low GINI-coefficient i.e. inequality
- LOW average hours worked
- low inflation to no inflation
econ niggers always whine about deflation because muh economy no move, what they actually whine about is nobody taking out fat loans they can siphon off from. Japan had that for quite a while. Suddenly every investment was done with saved up money and made sense, turns out that creates trust even in the upper financial brackets. The polar opposite is the US, see increased rate of car repos and tons of people using Klarna for fucking goyslop

Dude Japan's work productivity is like almost as bad as Greece. I'm like 90% sure by this point that myth was spread by the US to give the illusion of productivity when it's almost entirely a welfare state. That's part of the reason they're so cagey because they're taught to look busy. I don't care personally, but when you walk around and see a ridiculous amount of comically fake jobs you start to wonder why they even bother putting on a show. I'm talking crossing guards directing people down streets, 5 construction security guards that watch over a hole, like 2 greeters for every failing SME. Apparently they outsource most of their skilled labor and import all of their food/energy, I don't know how a system like this sustains itself, but the US has tons of excess food and oil that they just dump into Japan. Also it's way easier to be a private company in Japan they have like no regulations on anything, so it's an attractive destination for development.

meanwhile the Japanese fix their giant holes made by earthquakes in a fucking week, if we have a construction site in Germany expect that shit to stay for 3-12 months, even if it's as easy as removing the pavement, replace one (1) pipe, re-do the pavement.
Actual work ethic is great in Japan.
The slackers and inefficient mongoloids are all the office monkeys in Tokyo, even if things "improved" (westernized) in recent years their office culture is one of the worst in the world, and funnily enough, Western office mongoloids are going PRECISELY WHERE JAPAN WAS, and fast. Higher hours (see Merz' comments on the 40 hr week, the fucking gigaboomer), presence in office (more meetings YAAAAY holy shit I am so productive playing gay homo games on a board with P A P E R such creative), stagnating wages, zero chances to advance the career without some upper boomer dying.
It's basically the seniority system the Japanese have. CEOs don't fucking care, they make 400x our money why would they care if they don't get fucking shot for that?

Japan has lots of old people, there are papers on this done by people who care, where they've controlled for GDP contribution by employable age groups and it's ridiculously competitive to this day globally, they just have a ridiculous amount of old people that live very long.

Do you understand what GDP measures?
It's not the best measurement, but it's a reasonable thing to measure when you are limited by gold- and silver-based currency.
It becomes less reasonable when you measure paper money.
It becomes less reasonable when you measure bits moving around on a ledger.

What is it really measuring at this point?

Mostly fake number these days. For example, EU countries have to include illegal activities in their GDP. QoL in Japan isn't that great btw, have you seen how small their apartments are? And it's really hard for them to have kids because of a number of factors. Even safety isn't that good, especially for women in public transportation, and it's not because of niggers. They're clean but it's not enough to make life beautiful.

people need to stop using gdp as a measurement to all things, its not your 4x game with bigger gold numbers = more money.
its a tool for a specific thing, and nominal gdp specifically is good for international trade and measure economic activity, not all wealth combined.

I figure a large part of it is that the basic things you need to live are fairly inexpensive but luxuries are expensive. Which is the way things should be. In most of the west things have flipped on their head. The basic things we need to live have become expensive and luxuries have become cheap. Basically it's easier to be poor in Japan than the USA for example but also harder to move up than in the US.

It really isn't that impressive when you realize that their public works sector is still very overfunded compared to the US/EU and they have like 300 Vietnamese blue collar workers on standby ready for every slight tremor at every corner. That's one of the perks of high population density. Most jobs in Japan are sales jobs, those 'monkeys' are most of the workforce. The roads in my suburb are immaculate, but I can go one village over and they're terrible. It mostly depends where you put capital, and Japan has plenty. I feel bad for Germany in comparison because they manage their own energy sector, airspace, agriculture, engineering, etc while being tied to the Eurozone. Imagine if Germany had their own central bank where they can print themselves 3x over their GDP and import everything and you basically have Japan. Germany also has very low population density compared to Japan, almost 50% less. Which is impressive considering Germany is pretty dense. I'm pretty certain the Japanese service model was brought into the US by yuppie Gen X people who were reading books titled things like 'Beginner Mind: Zen and Stock Portfolio Management' Steve Jobs was like this too, pretty much all of the gen X CEOs are into this very secular orientalist mysticism, which was just thinly veiled bank deregulation. Btw the whole salaryman thing wasn't prominent in Japan until the 80s. After everything privatized in the 90s corporate work mostly became adult daycare, they're paying people to keep them off the streets and simulate competition while economy decouples from state. So yeah all of the complaints about Japanese work culture sucking is projection, the US/EU has been economically Japanified over the past 20 years.

ceo vs wagelet pay is 400x in america, but has stayed at something like 40x in japan, roughly the same as it was in america 50 years ago. the japs didn't break the unwritten social contract that kept workers relatively satisfied and income/lifestyle inequality at acceptable levels.
