10 years ago, I was working for a medium sized business. It made about 30 million a year. It had several 'cash cows', which were very simple software solutions that were in heavily regulated markets. When I was there I saw first hand how a new player wanted to enter the market, and was considering partner with them, saw just how simple the software was and said "actually I don't think we need you, we'll do it ourselves". The people who took over were literal bean counters, their background was accounting. They looked at the IT department and implemented "cost savings". One of those was to fire all of the DBAs to save some money. Within months the system started to suffer outages. They didn't know how to fix it. They even hired big four consultants who also couldn't fix it.

One of the guys they fired set up an LLC, provided his services for x10 what his hourly wage would've been. They paid it, because he actually knew the tangled mess of the system inside out and know what to do. I still remember the accountant trying to argue over the invoice because it was "just two SQL statements". To which the head of IT said, and the fact we didn't know which two means we had to pay him to find out.

There is a huge untapped market. Of older men, who have done retarded shit like outsource to India and let their IT systems run into the ground. With projects gone tits up. That will pay good money for a rescue (those that don't, aren't worth the time anyway). Look into forming something with old friends from highschool/college, you can make a few million a year easily.
