It's not a major conjecture. It's pretty old but that's because not many people have looked at seriously (if you look at the history of the problem in the paper you'll see this). This happens quite a lot in math. Most likely the people working on this problem in the past few decades only followed one approach (also common in math) and got stuck, whereas RZ found another angle toward possible counterexamples which others didn't see before. So it's a noteworthy result but not a really important conjecture, and he (correctly) calculated that promoting a trans jewish student by giving him this problem had more value for his career. Most likely coordinated with certain (((parties))) seeking to influence the course of math as well.

I have a degree in pure math, and this is the kind of stuff you study only after you get your PhD and decide to pursue a field of research. Very few people outside of this subdiscipline of math have even heard of the "Mizohata Takeuchi" conjecture, so how a 17 year old would find herself in the position to work on it is bizarre.

While normal 17 year olds are playing video games and doing stupid stuff with their friends outside of school, she is poring over the densest driest texts in math that make even motivated mathematicians want to pull their hair out after five minutes.
