The united states has never paid a cent of its national debt
The US can and does print money to pay for imports. It also borrows money on interest and then borrows to pay the interest and borrows some more. Practically speaking, US trade is just the world giving free things to the United States, they get pissed about the huge debt but they have never paid a cent of it.
They go like "but we pay a trillion in interest" while also borrowing 2 trillion.
