Human skulls are THE human symbol. If you strip away everything else, each skull looks alike and there is nothing in the world that really resembles it. Human skulls are instantly recognizeable to humans, that's just how we are.
You will say skulls symbolize death and death is bad, but everyone dies. It's inevitable and part of human nature. A skull symbolizes all the dead from before, every living human that was. Billions of people who lived and died, their lives and deaths directly leading to yours. Here we go to the graveyards and light candles. Go in the evening or at night. Millions of candles. The big graveyards have candles as far as eye can see. The ground is warm from the flames even if it's below freezing sometimes, everything is basked in orange glow. Cementeries aren't scary or sad, they are warm, welcoming, with beautiful stones adorned with beautiful flowers.
