It really is a different country. I am a semi-oldfag (upper 40s) and the US is a foreign country from what it was when I was a teenager. It's a different country that it was 30 years ago in 1995. I'd say society is unrecognizable from the way it was even in 2005 or maybe as recently as 2010.
And by saying the country has changed, I mean society (the way people interact with and regard each other) and culture (our basic beliefs and values and how we think) have changed so profoundly that we no longer live in the same society or culture as that which existed in, say, 1985.
And it's much harder to change a society and a culture than it is to change a political system. Cultural zones/nations can exist for millennia and, during that time, undergo many changes in government and systems of government, yet retain the same society and culture. China's culture goes back 3000 to 4000 years. India's is similarly ancient. Many attitudes and beliefs formed in the ancient world prevail across the world down to this day, but not in America, and increasingly not in any Western country.
The change has been breathtaking to behold. Or rather, it happened over years and decades so few people noticed it while it was happening, like how you don't notice a kid growing day to day but, six months later, the kid is noticeably larger when you think back. When I look back to how things were in 1992, yeah, this is a whole different society and culture.
The pace of change has likely never been so rapid in any place or time across world history as in modern Western countries, America most of all.

My parents both worked fulltime in decent but not very high paying jobs when establishing themselves but once they had done that they both worked basically part time while raising myself and my one sibling. They are both close to retirement now, and will live somewhat decently in that with not much but enough money. Their house cost 5 figures.
I am working full time in a high paying job, if I had married my ex who was also earning decent money, we would be just about keeping our head above water to pay a mortgage on a 6 figure house and to take care of a child, never mind two or more. The future, unless something very big changes, will likely hold no chance at retirement for either of us.
