i used to live like 2 blocks from that apartment building lol and substitute teach at the school next door. there was a really good seafood restaurant right there. right on the waterfront, great view.

not gonna dox myself or my friends who still live there, but if you end up moving to Ha Long and want to get some work, look up EConnect if you don't have any experience, Apple if you have some experience. avoid APAX, teachers aren't treated well there. getting an online TEFL should be sufficient but a short CELTA course would be better (albeit more expensive).

i miss vietnam desu, that's a good life. you won't save much money but your quality of life will be much higher than in the US. beautiful country, great people.

ha long is pretty boring though, if you want social life you should live in saigon or hanoi or maybe da nang. but places like ha long, da lat, various provincial capitals/tourist areas are good if you are looking for more of a relaxed life. i liked ha long a lot, even just sitting on a bench along the waterfront and looking at the big rocks was enough entertainment for me.

I make it a mini-vacation and go to Bangkok, Phnom Penh or Manila for a couple of days. A lot of expats take a bus to the Cambodian border (about 3 hours), cross the border and turn right back around. Nice busses, too. Comfortable seats and internet.

Some of the other posts are recommending Thailand, Philippines and others to live in. I can't argue with any of them. Life in any of these countries would be kino.

But Saigon works for me. Among my expat friends we call it life on steroids. Always interesting and fun. Basically unlimited chicks. You can find whatever you're into, from nice, educated girls from good families to hookers. And everything in between. It's up to you.

One thing to remember. It feels more foreign when you first get here than places like Bangkok or Manila. Some flaming faggots like the naysayers on this thread can't deal with that and bail quickly. But almost everyone who stays six months or so and settles in just loves it. You can't pry them out of the place.

Groids, jeets, and spics are but a distant memory here. Some of the locals can be difficult but so what? That's normal life. The net benefits of life here far outweigh any of the negatives.

You can't overestimate the impact of having sudden wealth. When you visit Vietnam you are wealthy, especially you Yanks. Sitting in a bar and drinking an excellent Hanoi beer for $1.20 about 70c yankdollars is liberating. Nice accommodation for cheap is freeing. Awesome food for peanuts is liberating. Saigon was the Southern Capital. This was the bastion of South Vietnamese independence. A ton of families here have older relatives that saved in the ARVN. They are very friendly toward the former allies and and tend to take a dim view of the Northerners. You'll hear the term "the Hanoi people." Those are the communists from the north that were moved here after the fall and still run everything here. Like any country, there is a lot going under the surface that foreigners don't know about.

Last year I was reading about Vietnam when I found out how cheap property can be in there. Then I learned you can't really own it and you only lease from government, which was disappointing. Still, it was interesting read. I wondered how life looks there, found some blog of polish guy who was trapped there during covid clownworld because of no flights back, stayed, found a wife and made family. Now he makes his living by organizing work for foreigners there which gives me mixed feelings because on one hand at least it's working, on the other it's still making your business on flooding country with foreigners. Vietnam looked like hidden gem in Asia when it comes to quality of life, prices and not being niggers like pajeets. Like east Asia but without shit that comes with being exposed to kikery like housing bubbles etc. Shame about humid climate, corruption and traffic chaos, but geograpy looks fantastic and it seemed you have really strong family values with whole family actually getting together to care for infants, giving young couples some breathing, which is extremely respectable.
In any case, I was extremely positively surprised. While living there probably isn't for me, I wouldn't mind visiting to see country if I ever decide to try abroad travel. How difficult is it to see some mountains, waterfalls etc instead of typical tourist concrete shit? Do you still have long forgotten mines laying around in forests since war? How is banditry outside of cities?
Also why the fuck all vietnamese restaurants are named "Ha Long" here? I thought it's some chain brand, but apparently they are separate restaurants and all name themselves after one of your cities. I often drop by to get some chicken with fries and salad because it tastes much better than typical fastfood.

Its a pretty place, a paradise, but like most paradises in the world its ruined by its people.
